Court Says UT Vehicles Can Hit Cyclists

This is a little late, but a few weeks ago, the Texas Supreme Court ruled against a woman who was hit while on her bicycle by a University of Texas truck on school property back in 2015. The argument said that she was considered to be trespassing and the Recreational Use Statute meant the university was not liable. It the view of a judge and then an appeals court, that was wrong and the cyclist could sue for damages. But the Supremes stepped in and sided with the 6 million pound gorilla and said that UT was immune from the lawsuit.

In my view it’s a stupid ruling that sets a horrible precedent. A Dude Abikes no likes. Here’s the link to an article in the Austin American-Statesman (see #9).

Full Moon Ride 11/11-11/12

I’ve yet to go on one of these, but they sound fun. Basically, you meet at midnight at the Pfluger Bridge on Town Lake in downtown Austin, and ride around for a while. The November moon is called the Beaver Moon or the Frosty Moon. If you’re curious, you can look that up. Why do I have to do everything around here for you?

46th-47th Streets and Bennett-Middle Fiskville Neighborhood Bikeways

Austin Transportation Department (ATD) is evaluating local streets in Central Austin neighborhoods as a network of proposed neighborhood bikeways . These local streets were selected for their street connectivity and characteristics, including naturally lower motor vehicle speeds and volumes.  Two routing options are being considered for the north-south direction:
— Alternative A – Caswell Avenue to E 46th Street
— Alternative B – Continue on Clarkson Avenue to Bennett Avenue

Funding for these changes has been identified from the 2016 Mobility Bond Bikeways and Sidewalks Programs.

Project Open House – ATD welcomes your ideas! Feedback from the people who use the street often results in project outcomes that better reflect community needs. A preliminary design will be available at the project open house along with the project team to answer your questions. Please come by for additional information on this project and provide feedback:

Tuesday, November 12, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Ridgetop Elementary, 5005 Caswell Avenue (Drop in anytime!) Review the project notification . The project survey will be available on this website beginning November 12 at 6 pm. The comment period will be open through Sunday, December 15.

Bicycle Sport Shop Guadalupe Re-Opens (ish)

To end on a high note: Laaaaaaaa! Anyway, not long ago, I lamented the closure of two bike shops in the University District area. Fortunately, one has salvaged half of itself. BSS has put up a dividing wall and retained the repair shop. They call it the Bicycle Service Station. So while there are no bikes for sale, there are accessories, tires, tubes and the like. However, there were two new bikes someone had ordered from their main shop, waiting for pick up. The friendly Joe, Mitchell and Tim were there tonight although I missed out on a photo op. Anyway, this wasn’t exactly a secret, but I’m glad it happened.
