A Visitor of Some Renown
Dr. Adonia E. Lugo, (maybe I’ll call her Doctor Wheelgood), who is Affiliate Faculty in Urban Sustainability at Antioch University Los Angeles, was here in Austin for the Imagine Austin Speaker Series. Her talk was called, “Mobility Justice: People Power & the Future of Urban Transportation.” Those in attendance said it was quite good. I wouldn’t know.
That’s because unfortunately, I didn’t hear about it until after the fact, which really bummed me out. A guy who knew about it said he was sure I was the one who told him — until he noticed I wasn’t there. Well, duh! I actually blogged about her recently in The Invisible Or Utility Bicyclist An Ignored Population. In it I reference her book (which I need to get and read and review here). It’s called Bicycle/Race: Transportation, Culture, & Resistance, a memoir about racial justice and sustainable transportation. The good news is that her talk was recorded on video and will be forthcoming at this City of Austin link.
All the Leaves Are Brown
And the sky is grey. Except when it’s blue. Luckily, Central Texas winters are mild. But it’s still winter. I’ve biked every day so far in 2019, for over 200 miles in two weeks. If there’s one thing I can tell you is that it’s still cold. Not like snow and sleet and ponds frozen over, but cold enough for our thin blood. Thanks either to one of my various health challenges or maybe just getting older, it feels 10 degrees F chillier than it is. Oh yeah, we also have this crap called cedar fever. It’s pollen, and not brown, it’s friggin’ yellow. It can be seen literally spewing out of the mountain juniper trees where the Hill Country begins west of town. I’d put up a picture of the vile Lucifer’s weed’s spray, but don’t want to give it any face time. Here are some of my rides on Strava recently.
We Have a Strava Down
Speak of the devil. (Say what you will about ol’ Satan, but he makes some very tasty eggs!) Apparently the servers for the popular social media and run/bicycle/etc. data geek website and app Strava had some trouble and went down over the weekend. People were freaking out that their runs and rides and such weren’t being logged. There was even a social media hashtag, #ifitsnotonstravaitdidnthappen. But they were recording, and presumably things are back to normal. You could probably file this under #firstworldproblems. And OK, this wasn’t just Austin bike news. Luckily, I didn’t have a problem, proving once again why sleeping in and skipping those early, dark and cold morning shop rides is, to quote the former Shrub-in-Chief Junior, a winning strategery! I’m not on the big three social media (still – I know!), but I do know this: #sleeping #winning!
