A Random Rest Day Potpourri Post After a 153-Mile Week on the Bicycle

It’s blog deadline time again.  Usually I have no problem coming up with a topic.  Tonight I kind of did.  I notice my posts tend to fall in several categories:  a status report on my biking / walking / yoga / dieting / blogging / book-writing; something educational, entertaining or informative about bicycling; something off-topic but tangentially related to riding a bike; and then the totally random rave, rant or other piece like a movie review.  This one is kind of a mix of the first and last.  I’m as curious to see where it goes as hopefully you are, and  I hope you like the smell of potpourri! Bike Austin Group Ride + 80’s Movie Quicksilver = Cheese & (Kevin) Bacon

After 1984’s Footloose, which your blogger certainly saw at the time but doesn’t recall his reaction to, Kevin Bacon was very popular. He chose to follow up a decent movie with one about a broker who loses his shirt in the stock market and becomes, quite logically, a bike messenger! There’s drama, action, love interests, an 80’s cheestastic soundtrack, and lots of bikes. The Alamo Drafthouse, which is known for showing all kinds of wacky movies, hosted, and Bike Austin Education Fund was the beneficiary. A Dude loves cheese a bit too much and also bacon, though I have mostly low-sodium turkey variety in my fruitless quest for health. (Well, I eat a lot of fruit, actually.) So bikes, cheese and a big helpin’ o’ Bacon (Kevin, that is)? Sign me up!

One Fine Day: Free Massage, Bike to Work Day, Deadpool 2

Today was one of those days that in retrospect was pretty fine. Not a totally perfect day by all means. Nor just one perfect moment like Anthony’s blog, Today’s Perfect Moment, which you could check out. It was a collection of moments, feelings, experiences, thoughts and more that together were really quite nice. Any day that includes a beautiful stranger rubbing oil on your sore muscles, a hilarious movie, and bikes, well, that’s one fine day. Do you want me to tell you about it? OK, since you insist.

Dreaming in Daylight, Riding on a Rainy Night

“I awoke last night to the sound of thunder

How far off I sat and wondered

Started humming a song from 1962

Ain’t it funny how the night moves

When you just don’t seem to have as much to lose

Strange how the night moves….”

Night Moves by Bob Seger

He awoke this morning from a deep slumber, face down, lines engraved on his face from the pillow. The unemployed, aging cyclist trudged to the bathroom then back to bed for a much-needed snooze after another late night staring at screens. Before the alarm went off, something outside the drafty casita woke him for good this time, and gingerly, he rolled out of bed. Not ready to face the wind and likely rain on his bicycle, he texted a fellow attender of the weekly job club, pleading for a ride. The gangly and kindly grad student (who may or may not have been spying on him for his thesis) agreed.

¡Sábado Pequeño! Fotografía para Vos

As usual on book writing days, I’m posting photographs, for now at least.   I hope you like them!  Although I biked a total of 21 miles, I called this Small Saturday, taking off from the huge Mexican TV Show, Gigantic Saturday (Sabado Gigante).  As always, you can access my bicycle riding stats, maps and other photos on the A Dude Abikes Strava feed.   If you’re on Strava, you’re welcome to please follow me there as well as here. Thank you for visiting my blog!  Y’all come back now, ya’ hea!  (A common Texanism.) Continue reading

Thursday Things: A Few Fotos & ADAB Roundup

ADAB Roundup

I’m beginning to wonder if posting photos on my book-writing days is worthwhile.  It steals focus from my last written post.  But it’s nice to have something posted every day.  Some people put up one picture, a 17-word haiku or even less than that, and that’s it.   Plus I like sharing photos and snippets of my day for those who are interested.  But it’s hard to tell what interests you, Dear Reader. Stormy: Weather, News and Mood + Movie Review: Phantom Thread

It was a dark and rainy morning.  After a late night re-creating my blog that the crappy wifi connection ate (I’ve since installed a wifi extender), I awoke to thunder and lightning.  So I padded over to the toilet, the one that is inside the shower stall, Asian-style.  Job done, I stumbled back to the cubby hole that my bed is in, drew the curtains, and slept as long as I could.  I dreamt vividly, but of what is now shrouded in the folds of my hippocampus.  Which always sounds like a university for hippopotamuses.  Or hippopotami, to use the correct Latin.  I awoke in a foul mood.

SXSW Day 8: Blood Fest, Doug Loves Movies and Rosemary & Garlic

I was going to title this post “A Comedy Podcast, Music Showcase and a Horror Film (Walk Into a Bar)” but then I decided the names were more interesting.  And because many people wouldn’t get the bar joke.  Also it’s really late — so late it’s no longer Friday — and I’m exhausted from attending six bands and a movie about a band on Thursday.  On top of that, the internet seemed to have stopped working so I lost the first half draft of this post.  So I’m not in the mood (for love or for redoing this.)  Let’s just get right to it, shall we?
