South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual, huge, internationally-famous smorgasbord at the intersections of technology, creativity, business, and more began today in Austin, Texas. After four days volunteering for the educational conference (SXSW EDU), I was already exhausted. But having mostly earned my free platinum all-access badge, I wasn’t going to sit home all day and miss out. It’s another awesome milestone for A Dude Abikes, five years of consecutive bendy-ness! Simultaneously remarkable and by now, just another day on the mat, it’s too momentous on occasion to not write about, even though this is predominantly a blog about bicycling. It’s also about my health journey, and yoga is an important part of that. A new blogger and follower who is curiously named uptightprettygirl said she found me by searching for blogs about yoga. That and my yogaversary made me realize that one reason I keep writing about my practice is to keep inspiring myself. Another is to inspire people who also do not fit the mold of a skinny, muscled, super-bendy young man or woman (aka fathlete) but whose bodies can definitely benefit from yoga. 1,634 days is a long time to do something consecutively, but today, June 6, 2018, marks that anniversary for me. Back on December 6, 2013, I began a regular yoga practice of 30 minutes per day. (It was actually 12/4/13, but I missed two days early on so I move the anniversary date up two days. If you want to get technical my anniversary is 12/25.) The point is that I have continued practicing yoga ever since, every day – without interruption – at all. I resolved to follow some advice I didn’t have words for at the time: Don’t Break The Chain, when I blogged about forming habits back on January 2. It’s ironic to be proud of what at heart is an humbling and internal practice. But important milestones bear acknowledgement, and since a major thrust of this blog is to try to inspire people, my yoga is a major component of that goal, as well as my life. Continue reading
I just finished a whole month of daily activities, three of which I wasn’t doing before. I feel slightly stronger in some ways, but in others, I’m exhausted. Still Stretchy After All These Years (4+)
Early readers of this blog or those new ones perusing the archives (welcome!) know that I have a daily yoga practice of 30′ (or more) going back to December 4, 2013. (I count the anniversary as December 6th, because I lost two days to having been on anesthesia for an exam.) When I counted up the days, the 1,500 benchmark seemed impressive enough to revisit. I actually reach that day Monday but becoming a D-list celebrity steals that fire. (I’m writing this Tuesday about this blog I forgot to finish on Saturday.) That’s OK, I’ll just do more yoga and it will calm the jangled nerves from all the paparazzi camped outside, clamoring for a few bon mots or a candid picture of A Dude Abikes. Continue reading
Today’s blog is a writing exercise. A Dude wants to see if he can write 500 words in 30 minutes. He can tend to be long-winded, and while that may appeal to some readers, it may dissuade others. Since I intend to write daily for some period, perhaps even the whole of January, it behooves me to be brief.
It’s refreshing to hear from people who read my blog recently. One is a fellow cyclist who bikes in the winter — in Finland! Thank you all! This blog was intended to be an experiment, and I have a lot to learn about doing it well.
