Austin Bike News Roundup for May 4, 2019

May is Bike Month around the US and world, and theoretically there are more things happening than usual. Yet, every month is bicycle-centric for me and thousands of bike riders in Austin, so it’s not that noticeable. Austin Bicycle News Roundup for March 23, 2019

Update: The bus driver who apparently murdered Anthony John Diaz was arrested for manslaughter. The woman was fired from Capital Metro and will have to answer for taking four prescription drugs that had side effects of drowsiness. Let’s hope there is some justice. For more about this developing story, see this Austin American-Statesman article. You can read my two posts about him here: First Austin Bicyclist Death of 2019 – Anthony John Diaz and also here: Ride of Silence to Ghost Bike for Anthony John Diaz – Presente!. Ride of Silence to Ghost Bike for Anthony John Diaz: ¡Presente!

Today was a somber occasion, the ride to remember Anthony John Diaz, run over by a bus on January 28th.  I’ve been on a few of these now and it both causes me literal grief, not to mention that another senseless, needless, horrible death of a person on a bike who was doing the right thing simply pisses me off.  For some reason, a city bus driver ran over and killed a person riding a bicycle.  We don’t know yet if she was overworked, high on drugs or booze, hated cyclists, or what.  The place it happened is one I ride a lot and was due to be fixed years ago, but wasn’t.

Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.
