My Morning Chocolate: The Dark Master

My Cherie Amour

Whole oat groats, 77% dark chocolate, pumpkin seeds, raisins, apple slices, Breathe Easy tea, H20

I awoke to a gray, rainy day. The kind of day where if you’re jobless like A Dude, to not skip to the loo then roll back into bed seems wrong. Eventually slumber, if not lethargy, left my brain, and I heard her silently, even psychically, calling to me as she does most mornings. Smooth, silky, sexy. I cannot resist her, so I make my way to her. I greet her, but she is passive. But I know she is always there for me. I believe she is from Africa, but we don’t discuss it. My lips touch, a dark brown sweet caress. She melts at the heat. I let out a deep sigh. She’s delicious, so satisfying. She is my morning chocolate.

“You’ll Always Return to Your Dark Master”

I think my love for chocolate can best be summarized by a scene from a little TV show that regular readers know A Dude is a big fan of — it’s called Seinfeld:

George: I am not giving you my code.
Kramer: I’ll bet I can guess it.
George: Pssh. Yeah. Right.
Kramer: Oh, alright. Yeah. Uh, let’s see. Um, well, we can throw out birthdays immediately. That’s too obvious. And no numbers for you, you’re a word man. Alright, let’s go deeper. Uh, what kind of man are you? Well, you’re weak, spineless, a man of temptations, but what tempts you?
George: Huh?
Kramer: You’re a portly fellow, a bit long in the waistband. So what’s your pleasure? Is it the salty snacks you crave? No no no no no, yours is a sweet tooth.
George: Get out of here.
Kramer: Oh you may stray, but you’ll always return to your dark master, the cocoa bean.

According to the Chocolove website, there is a strong association between chocolate and love.  “Phenylethylamine (PEA) is a naturally occurring compound in chocolate. When consumed, it releases endorphins in the brain and produces a mild feeling of euphoria, similar to the sensation of being in love. Other compounds that naturally occur in chocolate include serotonin, theobromine and anandamine which are all naturally occurring compounds that elevate mood, increase circulation and enhance sensory perception.”

Chocolove wrappers have a love poem on the back, and the chocolate is wrapped in gold paper.

I was going to write about some blogs I’ve found, and then also the local author’s event I attend most months in Austin called One Page Salon, but those will have to wait.  Because, chocolate.  But while I’m writing this blog, Milly Schmidt, a lovely lass and brilliant young writer of The Cat’s Write blog in New South Wales, Australia, chimes in with how she too loves chocolate, and is so hungry after reading another post of mine, and by the way, here’s a post she wrote about chocolate too.  I don’t think she’d mind if I quote her:

“…I can longer see anything but the object of my desire.”

Chocolate arouses desire in people, but also provides calm.  See, I think chocolate can bring world peace.  Not only does it provide the chemical rush described above, when raised organically and with fair trade, it is truly a global food loved by billions.  We only need to spend our countries’ tax dollars on the good stuff, not bombs.  Make Chocolove, not war, says A Dude!

Truly, Madly, Deeply:  My Abiding Love for Gene Wilder

No post on chocolate could omit my favorite chocolatier, eponymous book and movie character of all times, Willy Wonka.  He was portrayed in the movie by the inimitable and immensely talented and recently, dearly departed, late, great Gene Wilder.  (For a great interview with the TMC movie guy, which I think was Gene’s last, go here.)  So much has and could be said about it that all I can say is it’s my favorite childhood movie.  I was six when it came out.  I don’t know if my love of chocolate now had anything to do with it, but now that I think about it, it probably does at some deep subconscious level.

And if you were wondering if, how or when I was going to link this post about chocolate and Willy Wonka to bicycling, here is a still from the film with Wonka making whipped cream with a bike.

  1. When my granddaughter was a baby I always gave her a kiss whenever she arrived. When she got old enough to eat chocolate I would leave 1 chocolate kiss on the counter and told her I always have a kiss for her. She is going to be 7 in less than a month and now she opens the cupbaoard and takes out her kiss every time she comes. So my love of chocolate is my ritual with my granddaughter. I hope when I’m gone, every time she see’s a chocolate kiss that she will think of me!

    1. Been off processed grains since 1/1 save half a dozen times so I can skip the cake (for now), but chocolate is a friggin plant, i.e. health food, so it must be consumed in mass quantities! (Thank you Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain in Coneheads.)
